: DJ Guide: loving care

Taking care of your equipment is obviously(!?!) important;

  • it's expensive stuff
  • it'll last you longer
  • if you decide to sell it, it'll be worth more
  • you won't have to do without it so often while it's off for repairs

Follow any manufacturer advice, and basically keep everything as dust free and clean as possible.  Things like using your mixer as a skinning-up table may be very convenient at the time, but some of that backy's bound to slip into the faders (god forbid, any of your stash) and they'll need replacing.  Keep your stuff covered up when you're not using it to keep the dreaded dust at bay, specially your mixer - bung a towel over it when not in use.

Don't leave your precious records sitting on the platter attracting dust when you've finished - their ability in this department is incredible - put them away.  Dust on your records is bad news - if too much of it builds up behind the needle, the record will sound real bad.  Also dust and grime in your record grooves will wear your stylus out quicker, which in turn'll wear your records out quicker. Remember, records are your friend, dust is your enemy - so look after them.  Try not to put your fingers on them more than you have to, it's not really that smart or clever (mind you waving your records around in the DJ booth can look pretty cool) - and if you must, clean hands are more friendly than grimy ones.
